Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson to visit South Africa
Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson will visit South Africa on 23-25 February to take part in the United Nations High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability. She will also meet representatives of the South African Government and various sections of South African society for political talks.
The UN High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability is meeting to discuss a new vision for promoting sustainable development and proposals as to how this can be achieved. This kind of vision includes economic, environmental and social factors and should focus on solutions to significant global problems such as poverty and global environmental problems, and take account of social factors. Governments, business sectors and civil society organisations are important partners in this work.
In August 2010, the Secretary-General of the United Nations established a High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability led by Finnish President Tarja Halonen and South African President Jacob Zuma. Its task is to formulate a new vision for global sustainable development. Ms Gunilla Carlsson is a member of the Panel, which is to present its report at the end of this year.
