Explanation of Vote by Sweden at the UN Security Council Adoption on the situation in the Middle East (Syria)

Published

Explanation of Vote delivered by Ambassador Olof Skoog on behalf of Sweden at the United Nations Security Council Adoption on the situation in the Middle East (Syria), 17 November 2017, New York.

Mr. President,

I will be brief.

I do not need to repeat what I said in this Chamber yesterday about the JIM and the importance of it.

We appreciate the efforts made by the President and other partners to try to extend the mandate of the JIM.

We deeply regret that again this was not possible.

We believe that we all as members of this Council have a responsibility to do everything possible to ensure accountability for the use of chemical weapons and to stop proliferation of these weapons.

We therefore ask that informal consultations be convened immediately following the adjournment of this meeting to ensure that we have exhausted all efforts before the mandate expires.

Thank you Mr. President.
