Programme for the State Visit from Italy

The President of the Republic of Italy Sergio Mattarella will visit Sweden on 13–15 November at the invitation of H.M. The King of Sweden. The President will be accompanied by his daughter, Ms Laura Mattarella.

The three-day programme includes visits to Stockholm, Lund and Malmö, focusing on digital transformation and sustainability, European cooperation, research and culture.

Tuesday 13 November

Official welcome ceremony
The State Visit begins when the King and Queen meet President Sergio Mattarella and Ms Laura Mattarella at the Royal Stables for the carriage procession to the Royal Palace.

The official welcome ceremony will then be held in the Inner Courtyard, Royal Palace.  President Mattarella and the King will inspect the Grenadier Guards of the Life Guards and national anthems will be played.

The President and Ms Mattarella will be introduced to Riksdag and Government representatives in the Hall of State (Rikssalen), while the King and Queen greet the Italian delegation.

The King and the President will then give a press statement in Queen Lovisa Ulrika's Dining Hall.

Luncheon
The King and Queen will host a luncheon for the President and Ms Mattarella at the Royal Palace. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, and Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia will attend. A luncheon for representatives of the Italian delegation will be held at the same time at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities
Luncheon will be followed by a visit to Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities by the President and Ms Mattarella and the King and Queen. This museum dates back to 1794, making it one of Europe’s oldest public museums. Some of the sculptures exhibited in the stone galleries of the Royal Palace were acquired by King Gustav III on a trip to Italy in 1783–1784. The museum is still in its original location –  the Palace’s north western wing – and the sculptures are exhibited as they were in 1794.

Meeting with the Speaker of the Riksdag
In the afternoon, President Mattarella will meet Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén.

Wednesday 14 November  

Epicenter Stockholm
Wednesday begins with a visit to Epicenter, Stockholm’s ‘House of innovation’, where President Mattarella, Ms Mattarella and the King and Queen will be given a presentation of Epicenter’s activities. Epicenter’s founder and CEO, Patrick Mesterton, will receive the visitors. Chief Disruption Officer Hannes Sjöblad will accompany and guide the guests around some of the companies operating in this creative landscape for fast-growing digital companies and corporations that want to collaborate, learn and grown their businesses. Members of Epicenter are offered everything from innovation labs, events, training programmes and smart workplaces.

Ericsson Studio Kista
President Mattarella, Ms Mattarella and the King and Queen will then visit the Ericsson Studio in Kista. They will be received by Chairman of the Board of Ericsson Ronnie Leten, Vice President Government & Industry Relations Ulf Pehrsson and Head of Global Customer Unit Telecom Italia & Customer Unit Italy & South-East Europe Federico Rigoni. The visit will provide an insight into the various uses of 5G technology, including the benefits of technology in the vehicles sector and virtual reality. The joint ‘5G for Italy’ initiative will also be presented. This initiative aims to create an open ecosystem for research and implementation of innovative projects enabled by 5G technology. This year Ericsson is celebrating its 100th anniversary of operations in Italy.

Luncheon at Stockholm City Hall
Chair of Stockholm City Council Cecilia Brinck and Mayor of Stockholm Anna König Jerlmyr will host a luncheon at Stockholm City Hall. It will be attended by the President and Ms Mattarella, the King and Queen, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and approximately 100 other guests.

Nationalmuseum
The President and Ms Mattarella and the King and Queen will visit Nationalmuseum in the afternoon. They will be received by Director General Susanna Pettersson and shown some of the collections in the newly reopened museum. Nationalmuseum, Sweden’s museum of art and design, seeks to preserve cultural heritage and promote art, interest in art and knowledge of art by bringing especially historical art forms to life and highlighting their links with contemporary art and societal development.

Reception Italian Cultural Institute
The President and Ms Mattarella will host a reception for their Swedish hosts at the Italian Cultural Institute in Gärdet. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, and Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia will also attend. The Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and the King and President Mattarella will unveil the commemorative plaque. The King and Queen, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, and Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia will receive an introduction to the history of the Institute and its iconic design furniture by Director Maria Sica before the evening concert by Camerata Ducale Orchestra.

Thursday 15 November

The third day of the State Visit takes place in Lund and Malmö.

Arrival Malmö Airport
The President and Ms Mattarella arrive with the King and Queen at Malmö Airport. They will be received by County Governor Anneli Hulthén and Mr Sten Ljunggren.

European Spallation Source
The day begins with a visit to the European Spallation Source (ESS). The President and Ms Mattarella and the King and Queen will be received by ESS Director General Professor John Womersley, who will outline the operations at this multi-disciplinary research facility. This facility is based on the world’s most powerful neutron source and offers valuable research opportunities and instruments for pioneering research across the spectrum of scientific discovery. Italy is one of 13 members of the European Spallation Source ERIC, which together finance and run the research facility. In connection with the State Visit, the ESS Ion Source – the first major part of the ESS accelerator – will be inaugurated. The Ion Source, developed by ESS partner Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), is crucial for continued installation and operation of the acceleration and other parts of the research facility.

Address by President Mattarella, Lund University
President Mattarella will deliver an address at Lund University. Vice-Chancellor Professor Torbjörn von Schantz will receive the President and Ms Mattarella and the King and Queen.
