Sweden allocates SEK 120 million for Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine through World Food Programme (WFP)
The Government is allocating SEK 120 million for efforts to fight hunger in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine. This support will be channelled through the World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian organisation dedicated to fighting hunger.

State Visit from Finland
On 23–24 April 2024, the President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb and his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb will pay a State Visit to Sweden at the invitation of HM The King. The President will be accompanied by a delegation of government and business representatives.

The initiative has been spearheaded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise (GFCE), and Microsoft.

Sweden invests in sustainable growth and mobilises new capital for green and digital transition
Sweden is a leading donor of development assistance, but meeting the funding needs for a green and digital transition requires closer cooperation between development assistance and trade, greater mobilisation of private capital and harnessing the business sector’s innovation capacity. A current example of this is Sweden’s partnership with Bangladesh, which HRH Crown Princess Victoria visited together with Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell on 18–21 March.

Government adopts new development assistance strategy for Middle East and North Africa, focusing on economic development and counteracting irregular migration
The Government has decided on a new strategy for development cooperation with the Middle East and North Africa. The strategy amounts to nearly SEK 2.3 billion (approx. EUR 230 million) distributed over four years (2024–2027). Its purpose is to support actors working for more stable and democratic development, and to counteract the root causes of irregular migration.

Sweden increases humanitarian support to Bangladesh
Sweden plans to provide SEK 77 million in humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh via Sida in 2024, an increase compared with last year. This increase in support is due to growing humanitarian needs in Bangladesh, not least in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.

Renewed partnership with United States strengthens Sweden’s development cooperation
Sweden and the US are entering into a renewed development cooperation partnership through an agreement between the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The areas of focus include enhanced cooperation to promote sustainable development models, based on strengthened local ownership in close cooperation with the private sector.

HRH Crown Princess Victoria visits Bangladesh with Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell
The visit to Bangladesh will take place on 18–21 March on the occasion of HRH The Crown Princess’s role as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP Assistant Secretary General Ulrika Modéer will also take part.

Swedish flag raised at NATO headquarters
On Monday 11 March, Sweden’s flag was raised at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Together with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, a number of Ministers of the Swedish Government also took part. HRH Crown Princess Victoria, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Micael Bydén and the leaders of the Social Democrats, Sweden Democrats and Centre Party were in attendance as well.

Government issues disbursement of SEK 200 million to UNRWA following new agreement on stricter controls
The Government decided to issue a disbursement of SEK 200 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The decision was taken in light of the acute humanitarian situation in Gaza and UNRWA’s new undertakings within the framework of a conditional statement assurance to Sweden.

Joint statement on principles for development of future 6G policies
Sweden has signed a joint statement on principles for the development of the future 6G policies. The statement was presented on 27 February 2024 in connection with the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It includes an agreement on common principles that will guide research and development of future 6G policies both domestically and internationally.

Sweden is a NATO member
Just before 17.30 CET, Sweden’s instrument of accession was deposited with the United States Government, as depositary of the North Atlantic Treaty. Therefore, Sweden is now a member of NATO.
