Initiatives to increase participation in EU affairs
The Swedish Government is working to strengthen participation, knowledge and engagement in EU-related issues in Sweden. In cooperation with relevant actors in society, the Government is creating better conditions for citizens to participate in EU affairs and influence decisions taken at EU level.
The EU handshake
Through the EU handshake, Minister for EU Affairs and Trade Ann Linde is inviting relevant actors to help strengthen participation, knowledge and engagement in EU-related issues in Sweden.
Initiatives to strengthen knowledge
Strengthening knowledge about how the EU operates is an important part of the Government’s efforts to increase opportunities for access and participation in issues decided at EU level. This is why teachers, school leaders, elected representatives and employees in municipalities and regions are being offered various courses with the aim of increasing knowledge about the EU. The efforts in the EU handshake also help improve knowledge about the European Union.
Strengthened consultation procedures and EU thematic consultation forums
Strengthening the Government’s consultation procedures is an important part of increasing participation in decisions taken at EU level. Here, clear and well-functioning forms are required for civil society to conduct a dialogue with the Government on issues decided at EU level. In the first half of 2017, the first EU thematic consultation forums were held.
