On 9 April, the Government adopted a legislative amendment that makes it possible for the National Veterinary Institute to conduct diagnostic tests for the COVID-19 virus in people.

The National Veterinary Institute has Sweden’s largest laboratory for animals and is able to switch operations and conduct COVID-19 test analysis for the health care system, without having to cut back on its normal diagnostics operations. With the amendment to the Ordinance containing instructions to the National Veterinary Institute (2009:1394) adopted today, the National Veterinary Institute can without hindrance in this situation assist the health care system with with diagnostic tests for COVID-19.

“The National Veterinary Institute has large-scale and highly advanced analysis operations for animals. We welcome the fact that the Institute can now rapidly switch operations,” says Minister for Rural Affairs Jennie Nilsson.
