Results of final round of consultations in selection process for new OECD Secretary-General
In the final phase of the selection process for the post of Secretary-General of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), which stood between Sweden’s candidate Cecilia Malmström and the candidate from Australia, Mathias Cormann, the latter received the strongest support from the OECD Member countries.
Mathias Cormann is expected to be formally appointed the next Secretary-General of the organisation during the next OECD Council meeting.
“Cecilia Malmström consistently received broad support from the Member countries, and the outcome was close. We are grateful for all of the support throughout the process. Sweden will now join the consensus behind the Australian candidate” says Minister for Foreign Trade and Nordic Affairs Anna Hallberg.
Sweden nominated Cecilia Malmström for the post in September 2020.
“I am proud to have been Sweden’s candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the OECD. I would like to thank the Swedish Government for supporting me throughout the process. I am also grateful for the support and confidence shown to me by the OECD Member countries. Finally, I would like to congratulate Mathias Cormann on the strong support he received in the final vote. I wish him every success in the process going forward,” says Ms Malmström.
