Statement by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven on the passing of President George HW Bush

George HW Bush was President of the United States of America during a time of important transition in the world. He was politically active throughout the post-war years, and led the United States during one of the greatest periods of upheaval of our time – the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War and the break-up of the Soviet Union. During these decisive years, new forms of cooperation could be attempted between former adversaries. President Bush’s attitude contributed to a stability in Eastern Europe that would otherwise probably have been difficult to achieve.

President Bush believed in the UN and multilateralism as the best way forward. In the latter years of his life, he took a clear stand in favour of common sense, and against increasing polarisation.

President Bush will be remembered for his deeds, and for his humility, his humour and his fundamental decency. Our thoughts and condolences go to the President’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and to the entire American people.
