Defence cooperation between Sweden and Finland

Sweden and Finland have a shared security policy perspective and cooperate closely on defence. Sweden collaborates with Finland both bilaterally and within multilateral forums such as the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO), the EU, the UN and NATO. As NATO members, Sweden and Finland will be even better equipped to intensify their cooperation.

About the defence cooperation

  • Aim of the cooperation

    The aim of the defence cooperation between Sweden and Finland is to enhance defence capabilities, enable joint operations and promote shared defence interests, including strengthening security in the Baltic Sea region.

  • Defence cooperation intensified in stages

    Sweden and Finland have a long history of defence cooperation. This cooperation covers times of peace, crisis and war, and the aim is to establish the necessary conditions to take joint military action in various scenarios. This in turn raises the threshold for military incidents in our neighbourhood.

  • The defence cooperation in practice

    At armed forces level, cooperation takes place within all military forces. This includes exercises and training, establishing joint operational capabilities, air and maritime surveillance, securing communications and joint use of military infrastructure, and using each other’s ports and air bases.
