Reduce access to illegal firearms and explosives

A critical factor behind the serious and deadly violence is access to weapons. Reducing access to firearms and explosives is an important part of prevent criminal networks from committing serious crimes of violence.

The Swedish Police Authority has assessed that criminal networks’ access to weapons and explosives is generally good. Firearms and firearms parts are smuggled into Sweden. Swedish authorities have also assessed that illegal domestic firearms production is growing. Bombings can be carried out using smuggled grenades and mines, stolen explosives for civil use or homemade explosives. Reducing access to firearms and explosives is key to making it more difficult for criminal networks to commit serious violent crime.

Objective

Access to illegal firearms and explosives for unlawful purposes must be reduced.

 

Efforts towards this objective requires:

  • preventing unlawful imports and smuggling to a greater extent;
  • increasing the risk of detection that lead to legal proceedings for crime related to illegal firearms and explosives and
  • intensify controls and inspection of the handling, and trade, of firearms and explosives.
