President of German Max Planck Society visited Jan Björklund
On 13 June, Minister for Education Jan Björklund was visited by Professor Peter Grüss, President of the German Max Planck Society (Max Planck Gesellschaft). The Max Planck Society is a group of basic research institutes in all areas of science, with its headquarters in Munich. In total, there are more than 80 Max Planck institutes in Germany and a number of other countries. More than 5 000 researchers work at these institutes, with an overall annual budget of EUR 1.5 billion. Peter Grüss is a professor of microbiology and was involved in developing the process of producing insulin from stem cells. He has been President of the Max Planck Society since 2002.

Visit from India
Minister for Education and Deputy Prime Minister Jan Björklund on Thursday welcomed India's Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur in Stockholm. Their discussions included the positive cooperation between India and Sweden in the area of research, and also followed up on Mr Björklund's visit to India in the spring. During her time in Stockholm, Ms Kaur will also meet Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Frank Belfrage, and visit the Riksdag and Stockholm City Hall.

Parental leave and childcare in focus during Polish visit
Minister for Gender Equality Maria Arnholm today received Poland's gender equality minister Agnieszka Kozlowska-Rajewicz. Ms Kozlowska-Rajewicz is here to study how parental leave and childcare are designed in Sweden, and what the Government is doing about men's violence against women. The two ministers will also pay a visit to the National Police Board to learn about the work of the police, and in particular the campaign against crime in close relationships being conducted by the police.

The Government's Research and Innovation Bill 2012
On Thursday 11 October the Government put forward a bill to the Riksdag entitled Research and Innovation. The bill contains investments raising the level of appropriations for 2013-2016 by SEK 4 billion.
