Barriers to crime – a crime prevention strategy

In Sweden, everyone must be able to live a secure life without fear of being a victim of crime, regardless of who they are or where they live. To counteract the major challenges connected to crime and insecurity in our country, investments in the judicial system and criminal law measures must be combined with effective and proactive crime prevention efforts. The Government’s national strategy Barriärer mot brott (Barriers to crime) is an important part of these efforts. The focus of the strategy is social crime prevention efforts, including the prevention of children and young people from becoming involved in criminal networks and other crime, and ensuring that those who do commit crimes leave that world behind.

To combat crime and increase security, investments in the judicial system and criminal law measures must be combined with effective and proactive crime prevention efforts. The Government has therefore presented a national strategy that focuses on social crime prevention measures. The aim includes preventing children and young people from becoming involved in criminal networks and other types of crime.

Strategies for increased safety and security in Sweden

The Government has recently presented three new national strategies for increased safety and security in Sweden. These are a strategy for strengthening efforts against violent extremism and terrorism, a strategy against organised crime and a crime prevention strategy on social prevention measures against criminal networks. You can read more about the strategies here.

The national strategy applies to four prioritised areas

Effective and knowledge-based crime prevention efforts

Reversing the trend of gang crime and also combating other types of crime requires coherent and systematic crime prevention efforts that are effective and knowledge-based.

The first barrier to crime – broad preventive efforts

Sweden is a wonderful country to live in. At the same time, there is no question that our country is facing serious challenges related to crime and insecurity. Broad and structured crime prevention efforts are needed to counteract criminal networks and also prevent other types of crime.

The second barrier to crime – negative trends must be broken early

Crime prevention efforts must focus more on early preventive measures and outreach than is currently the case. Children and young people with risk behaviour or norm-breaking behaviour must be identified at an early stage and provided with adequate measures and support. This is also crucial to stopping recruitment to criminal gangs.

The third barrier to crime – criminal careers must be stopped

Work related to people involved in crime requires different types of efforts by several societal actors. These efforts need to reach more people – children, young people and adults – and the content needs to be of high quality and based on knowledge about good practices.
