1325 Consultations in Palestine and the DRC

Published Updated

As part of the process of revising the Swedish National Action Plan on implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs is currently undertaking field consultations with relevant actors in conflict and post-conflict countries.

The purpose of these consultations is to listen to the voices of local stakeholders and to get an improved understanding of what a country like Sweden can do to further contribute to the implementation of the 1325 agenda.

Palestine was first out among the countries selected for these field consultations. On the 7th of May meetings were held with actors from different sectors of the Palestinian society, including civil society organisations and state representatives. These consultations were held in Ramallah in the West Bank and were arranged by the Swedish Consulate General in Jerusalem in cooperation with the Swedish civil society organisation Kvinna till Kvinna.

The consultations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are being held on 18-23 May in the context of a regional journey 'in the footsteps of 1325' in eastern DRC and Rwanda, organised by the Swedish embassies in Kinshasa and Kigali.

In the up-coming months, similar consultations will be held in Afghanistan, Liberia and Colombia.

Facts: Resolution 1325

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security in 2000. The Security Council emphasised that it was necessary for international peace and security to pay attention to and take measures to prevent the negative impact of armed conflict on women, and to increase the participation and influence of women in conflict resolution, peacekeeping and peacebuilding. Six subsequent resolutions have since been adopted and the seven resolutions together constitute the international agenda for women, peace and security.

Compliance with Resolution 1325 and the subsequent resolutions is a priority issue for Sweden. Sweden has had a national action plan for the implementation of Resolution 1325 since 2006. A new action plan is currently being drafted and will take effect at the beginning of 2016.
