The purpose of the Swedish Institute for Human Rights is to promote and protect human rights in Sweden, based on the Swedish Constitution, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and other obligations in the area of human rights that are binding on Sweden under international law.

The institute will also perform the tasks of an independent national mechanism under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
