Press release from Ministry for Foreign Affairs

Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell travels to Georgia

Published

On 7 May, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell will visit Georgia’s capital city Tbilisi together with State Secretary Diana Janse. There, they will meet with official representatives, civil society and opposition government representatives.

“The Government is closely following the worrying developments in Georgia. Sweden is the third largest bilateral donor to Georgia and our reform cooperation goes back several decades. Georgia’s strong and independent civil society has a vital role to play in the country’s continued journey towards EU membership,” says Mr Forssell.

During the visit, Mr Forssell will meet with Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvilli, Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilia Darchiashvili, and several representatives of civil society and the country’s political opposition.

Sweden’s support to Georgia

Sweden’s total support to Georgia in recent decades amounts to SEK 3 billion. In 2024, reform cooperation with Georgia is expected to amount to more than SEK 200 million, making Sweden the third largest bilateral donor. A significant part of Swedish assistance goes to civil society organisations.
