“Sweden and Japan have strong ties of friendship. Our diplomatic relations stretch back over 150 years. This strategic partnership between Sweden and Japan takes relations between our two countries to a new level and paves the way for long-term cooperation on security and defence, trade and investment, and research and innovation,” says Mr Kristersson.
The partnership was announced during the Prime Minister’s visit to Japan. The trip is part of the Swedish Government’s aim to strengthen relations with countries in the Indo-Pacific region and is an important component of the preparations ahead of Sweden’s participation in World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Japan is Sweden’s second-largest export market and third-largest trade partner in Asia.
During the visit, Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch signed a bilateral Memorandum of Cooperation with her Japanese counterpart. The agreement aims to enhance Sweden and Japan’s cooperation on energy and innovation.
