Government establishes new award for Swedish volunteer projects in support of Ukraine

Published

Today, the Government has called for nominations for a new annual award to highlight non-governmental Swedish civilian projects for Sweden. Every year, a Swedish organisation and an individual or a group of individuals who have voluntarily undertaken extraordinary projects for Ukraine will receive this award. The recipient will also receive funds to continue their efforts.

“Support for Ukraine is more important than ever. Central government support to Ukraine is increasing further. The Government recently presented both its largest civilian and its largest military support packages to date. All of Sweden stands behind Ukraine, and that includes volunteer initiatives. The Government wants to highlight, praise and support these endeavours with a new award. Passionate volunteers, businesses, non-governmental organisations, municipalities, higher education institutions and many others have shown their incredible commitment. The new award will go to recipients who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary civilian projects for Ukraine and demonstrated drive, compassion and perseverance,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa.

The Government has tasked the Swedish Institute with establishing and administering the award. The call for applications and nominations for this year’s award and more information is available at si.se. The award recipient will be announced later this year. The winning organisation will receive approximately SEK 1.8 million and the winning individual or group of individuals will receive up to SEK 200 000 so that they can continue and expand upon their projects for Ukraine.

“It won’t be easy choosing winners of this award. So many initiatives for Ukraine have been undertaken by so many strong people in our society. By highlighting exceptional examples, the Government, together with the Swedish Institute, hopes to inspire continued and even broader volunteer engagement for Ukraine,” says Mr Dousa.
