Government seeks to highlight civilian action along Swedish-Norwegian border during the Holocaust

In connection with Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January 2026, the Government decided to task the Living History Forum with highlighting civilian action along the Swedish-Norwegian border to assist those escaping Norway to Sweden during the Holocaust. The assignment will draw attention to traces of the Holocaust as part of the Swedish-Jewish cultural heritage.
“Sweden and Norway are connected in so many ways. Especially through all those brave civilians on both sides of the border who put their lives on the line to heroically rescue Jews, resistance fighters and others who needed to flee from Nazi-occupied Norway to Sweden. This assignment will allow witness accounts and traces of what happened to be highlighted and made more widely known, and shed new light on our shared history during the Holocaust. It will also demonstrate the significance of civil courage in dark times,” says Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand.
This assignment is part of the Government’s strategy to strengthen Jewish life and combat antisemitism in Sweden. As part of this, the Living History Forum will produce material that can be used in schools and in liberal adult education. Where possible, the material will be adapted for use in public places such as museums and libraries.
