On 17 May, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson received Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in Gothenburg on the occasion of Sweden and India upgrading their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. Mr Kristersson and Mr Modi also met with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

“Sweden and India share a partnership shaped by more than a century of cooperation, trust and entrepreneurship. I am grateful for the strong ties that have brought us here today, and I am confident that our cooperation will continue to grow through innovation, sustainability and digital transformation. Together, we look ahead with optimism and a shared commitment to the future,” said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Through their partnership, Sweden and India are deepening their cooperation in important sectors for the future, such as innovation, technology and green transition.

Within the framework of the partnership, and based on the negotiated EU-India Free Trade Agreement, the two countries have additionally agreed on the common goal of doubling their economic exchange, including both trade and investment, within five years.

Sweden and India plan to intensify their cooperation on space, innovation, emerging technologies and green transition. At the same time, they aim to strengthen dialogue on foreign and security policy, with an intensified focus on issues such as economic security, supply chains, cyber issues and counterterrorism.

Mr Kristersson also met with Ms von der Leyen, who invited guests to a European business dinner, with Mr Modi as guest of honour. In a joint press statement with Mr Kristersson and Mr Modi, Ms von der Leyen expressed confidence following the decision taken by the EU and India at the beginning of the year to expand their cooperation and enter into the historic free trade agreement.

Mr Kristersson and Mr Modi also emphasise the importance of the partnership between India and the Nordic countries, ahead of the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on 19 May 2026.
