Published

The Government has decided to appoint Tone Hansen as director and head of Moderna museet. She will take up the post on 1 September 2026.

Ms Hansen has been director of Oslo’s MUNCH (the Munch museum) since 2022. Prior to that, she was director of the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Oslo. She has also served on the boards of various private museums and of Arts and Culture Norway.

“Tone Hansen is an experienced museum director and is deeply rooted in the culture and art world. She has extensive experience of working with visions and strategy, museum development and new perspectives on museums’ role in society. I’m convinced that she will help boost Moderna museet’s standing in the museum world, both nationally and internationally. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Gitte Ørskou for her seven years as head of Moderna museet,” says Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand.

“I’m both proud and honoured to be entrusted with the task of leading and staking out a new direction for Moderna museet. My ambition is to create stronger, more innovative and knowledge-driven operations at one of the world’s most influential museums, with a focus on the art, the architecture, the design and the public,” says Ms Tone Hansen.

The Government is appointing Ms Hansen as director and head of Moderna museet from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2032.
