Statement by Tobias Billström

Statement from the Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström

Published

"It was with great dismay that I received the news that Swedish citizen Habib Chaab has been executed today.

The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its use under any circumstances.

Ever since Habib Chaab was sentenced to death, the Swedish Government has raised his sentence with Iranian representatives at the highest levels and demanded that it not be enforced.

The Government has urged Iran not to enforce the death sentence and I have raised the matter personally with Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs."
