Statement from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on the detention and death sentence of Ahmadreza Djalali in Iran
Published
We have received extremely worrying signals regarding Ahmadreza Djalali’s deteriorating health. Consequently, the Iranian Ambassador was urgently summoned to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on 7 March.
During the meeting, demands were made for Mr Djalali’s immediate release on humanitarian grounds so that he may be reunited with his family. Concurrently, Mr Djalali must immediately receive the medical attention he so clearly needs. Demands for consular access to Mr Djalali were also reiterated.
The meeting reiterated Sweden’s clear objection to the death sentence and its demand that it should not be carried out. Sweden’s and the EU’s position on the death penalty is very clear. We condemn the use of the death penalty and we oppose it – always, everywhere and regardless of the circumstances.
