SEK 25 million to boost Ukraine’s ability to investigate war crimes

Published

The Government has decided to contribute SEK 25 million to Ukraine to help digitalise the country’s processing of criminal cases. This Swedish support will increase Ukraine’s ability to investigate war crimes committed during Russia’s full-scale invasion. The support will be channelled via the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) in cooperation with the European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM) and the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.

Criminal cases in Ukraine have previously been processed on paper. A new digital case processing system will enable criminal cases to be handled more rapidly, resulting in shorter waiting times for justice for war crime victims.

“Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we have seen Russia bomb everything from playgrounds to children’s hospitals, schools and homes. The Government wants to help ensure justice for the victims of the war. This is why we are now boosting Ukraine’s ability to investigate and prosecute war crimes, and other international offences, using digitalisation. Swedish support makes a difference and we are proud to be involved in building a more resilient and modern judicial system in Ukraine,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa.

The Swedish support is part of broader assistance from the EU Member States that aims to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice for the victims of the war. It also helps Ukraine to meet the conditions of EU membership and progress in that direction. Via MSB, Sweden has purchased and donated necessary hardware and software for the Ukrainian security services, police and Prosecutor General’s Office and the regional prosecutor’s office in Odesa.
