NATO has appointed Major General Lena Persson Herlitz as Deputy Assistant Secretary General Intelligence, a leading position within the Alliance.
“This is an important appointment for Sweden. Major General Persson Herlitz will now be one of the more senior Swedish officials at NATO. This is in line with Sweden’s overall objective of getting more Swedes in relevant NATO positions,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.
Ms Persson Herlitz will serve at the Joint Intelligence and Security Division at NATO headquarters in Brussels. She will assume her new role after the summer of 2026.
Ms Persson Herlitz has enjoyed a long military career, which has included roles such as military strategic operational commander at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters. She served in international missions to Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, and also headed the Swedish delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, which monitors the Korean Armistice Agreement.
