The Government has decided to nominate Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall as the new Swedish European Commissioner for the period 2024–2029.

A new Öresund Agreement that will make life easier for cross-border commuters, a joint declaration on competitiveness and security by Nordic heads of government, and consensus on how to raise the level of ambition in global environmental efforts. These are just a few examples of what has been achieved during the first six months of Sweden’s Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The King and Queen of Denmark will pay a State Visit to Sweden on 6–7 May 2024 at the invitation of His Majesty The King.

On 8–9 April, Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall represented the Swedish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers at the Nordic Council Theme Session.

On Monday 5 February, Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström and Minister for EU Affairs, with responsibility for Nordic affairs, Jessika Roswall informed the diplomatic corps of the priorities for the N5 and NB8 and the Nordic Council of Ministers, all of which will be chaired by Sweden this year. Today is the first day of the one-year Swedish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, the official body for intergovernmental cooperation in the Nordic region. The programme for the Swedish Presidency is based on the vision of the Nordic region being the world’s most integrated and sustainable region by 2030. A special priority of the Swedish Presidency is to eliminate border barriers and promote mobility and integration.

Yesterday evening, the Government received the alarming news that two Swedes were killed in a terrorist attack in Brussels. The attack appears to have been aimed at Sweden and Swedish interests. Our thoughts are with the deceased and their relatives.

The Stockholm Symposium on Democracy and the Rule of Law will gather experts from EU institutions, Member States, enlargement countries and international organisations, and representatives of the media, civil society, academia, businesses and the judicial system. The aim is to hold a constructive dialogue on efforts to strengthen democracy and the rule of law in the EU.

Support for Ukraine and continued pressure on Russia, climate and energy issues, and putting long-term EU competitiveness on the agenda have defined the first half of the Swedish Presidency. The Presidency has led the work in the Council towards the goal of making the EU safer, greener and freer.

On Friday 31 March, Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall will hold a press briefing on the occasion of the halfway point of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

On Tuesday 21 March, the Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Roswall invites Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna to the General Affairs Council for an informal lunch discussion. During the lunch, which will be hosted by the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU together with Lithuania, Ms Stefanishyna will talk about how the Ukrainian Government is working on the reforms necessary for the country’s ever-closer ties to the EU.

Today, Monday 16 January, Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall will travel to Strasbourg to represent the Swedish Presidency of the Council at the plenary session of the European Parliament.
