Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard visited Beijing on 16–17 October. During her visit, Ms Malmer Stenergard held a bilaterial meeting with China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi. Ms Malmer Stenergard also met with representatives of Swedish businesses operating in China.
Ms Malmer Stenergard’s trip to China took place against the backdrop of Sweden and China marking 75 years of diplomatic relations this year.
The foreign ministers discussed issues of importance for relations between the two countries, such as security, human rights and trade. Gui Minhai was detained ten years ago, something that was also raised by Ms Malmer Stenergard during her meeting with Mr Wang. The case is a high priority for the Government, and efforts to secure Gui Minhai’s release and enable him to be reunited with his family continue unabatedly.
In connection with Ms Malmer Stenergard’s visit, China announced that Swedish travellers wishing to visit the country will be offered visa-free travel, as is the case with several other European countries. This will make things easier for Swedish businesses and travellers.
