Four years of war: support to Ukraine remains Government’s foremost foreign policy priority

Published

Today marks four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. How the war ends will affect security in Europe for at least a generation going forward, which is why Ukraine’s security is ultimately Sweden’s and Europe’s security as well. Support to Ukraine thus remains the Government’s foremost foreign policy priority.

“Russia’s war against Ukraine is now entering its fifth year. It has become as long as the Second World War. The Swedish people’s support for Ukraine’s fight for freedom has been strong from day one. Together, we’ve donated everything from blankets, medical equipment and generators to aircraft, artillery and combat vehicles. Today on the anniversary, I’m in Kyiv as a representative of the Swedish people’s support for Ukraine. We don’t yet know when the war will end, but how it ends will affect Sweden’s security for at least a generation to come. And that’s why our continued support is so crucial,” says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Support to Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia

As long as Russia’s aggression continues, Sweden will remain committed to its two-point plan: more support to Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia. Support to Ukraine is both a moral obligation and an investment in Europe’s security, independence and future.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden has provided extensive military, humanitarian and other civil support to Ukraine. Sweden’s support to Ukraine since the invasion began totals around SEK 128 billion. Sweden has taken joint decisions with the EU on extensive macroeconomic support initiatives and a number of sanctions packages against Russia.

Sweden’s overall support – military support and development assistance – saves lives and strengthens Ukraine’s resilience. Sweden will continue to provide political, humanitarian, military and financial support to Ukraine for as long as it takes.
