Sweden's support to Ukraine

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden has provided extensive military, humanitarian and other civilian support to Ukraine. Sweden also provides economic support, assistance with civilian crisis management and support to Ukraine’s reform efforts and reconstruction. Since February 2022, Sweden has contributed approximately SEK 153,5 billion to various initiatives supporting Ukraine (3 June 2026). Together with the EU, Sweden has also decided on extensive macroeconomic support initiatives and several sanctions packages against Russia.

Sweden supports Ukraine’s efforts to achieve a fair and sustainable peace based on international law and the UN Charter.

  • Sweden strengthens Ukraine’s energy supply ahead of winter

    Last winter, Ukraine’s electrical grid and power plants were intensively attacked by Russia. Ukraine must now make extensive efforts to ensure the energy supply for the coming winter. The Swedish Government has therefore approved a new support package for Ukraine worth approximately SEK 1.5 billion to support the country’s energy sector in 2026. It is expected to contribute to preparation through repairs, installation of new energy production, material support and enhanced nuclear safety.

    Yesterday, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa has presented the Government’s annual award for Swedish volunteer projects in support of Ukraine. The 2026 recipients are Elly Reinolds and OperationChange.

  • Sweden joins special tribunal and international claims commission for Ukraine

    The Government has decided that Sweden will join the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine and the International Claims Commission for Ukraine. Demanding accountability for Russia’s crimes against Ukraine is an important priority for the Swedish Government. The aim is to ensure redress and justice for Ukraine and its people.

Humanitarian and civilian support to Ukraine

Sweden has long provided development assistance to Ukraine comprising both reform-oriented development cooperation and humanitarian support. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden has provided Ukraine with approximately SEK 25.5 billion (approx. EUR 2.3 billion*) in civilian and humanitarian support.

Military support to Ukraine

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden has provided military support to Ukraine. This includes bilateral military support, contributions to training initiatives and payments to funds for Ukraine. The total value of Sweden’s military support to Ukraine amounts to approximately SEK 128 billion (approx. EUR 12 billion*).

Sanctions against Russia

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has imposed a series of sanctions packages against Russia. The sanctions target the financial, energy and transport sectors, dual-use exports and visas. Sanctions have also been imposed on individuals and entities.

    Since February 2022, Sweden contributed approximately SEK 153.5 billion to various initiatives that support Ukraine (3 June 2026). This also includes some support to Moldova due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
