Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for issues concerning Sweden’s military defence, coordination of civil defence and crisis preparedness, and protection against accidents. Its strategic planning includes international operations and security-building activities, which the agencies are instructed to implement and follow up.

    The security situation has deteriorated in both the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions in recent years. When Japan’s Minister of Defense Minoru Kihara met with Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson in Stockholm on 25 July, discussions included deepened cooperation to tackle these challenges.

    On 12 July, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson signed a Letter of Intent concerning security cooperation between Sweden and the U.S. state of New York. The cooperation will be mainly between the Swedish Armed Forces and the New York National Guard as part of the United States’ State Partnership Program (SPP).

Sweden has taken part in NATO Summit for the first time as full member

On 9–11 July, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson took part in the NATO Summit in Washington DC together with Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström and Minister for Defence Pål Jonson. The member states agreed on new support to Ukraine and measures to strengthen NATO’s capability for deterrence and defence. NATO also celebrated its 75th anniversary during the summit.

The Government adopts Sweden's first defence and security space strategy

“With this strategy, we are strengthening the defence and security dimension of space policy so that Sweden is better postured to meet the challenges in space and to use space for defence and security,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

Defence Cooperation Agreement with the United States

The Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Sweden and the US was adopted by the Riksdag on 18 June 2024. The Government submitted a bill on the issue to the Riksdag on 8 May 2024.

Sweden’s national security – for a safer and more secure Sweden in uncertain times

The Government has adopted Sweden’s new national security strategy, which includes five guiding principles for management of Sweden’s security. It constitutes the framework for the Government’s work on national security until 2030.
