Minister for Foreign Affairs visits Japan

Published

On 13–14 October, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard will be in Japan to participate in Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s official visit to Hiroshima and Tokyo. During the visit, Ms Malmer Stenergard will meet with her Japanese counterpart.

“Asia’s and Europe’s security are becoming increasingly interlinked. It is therefore in Sweden’s interests to engage with East Asia and strengthen our cooperation with likeminded countries such as Japan. This visit is an opportunity to further deepen our cooperation on defence and security and on green and digital transition,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.

In Hiroshima, Ms Malmer Stenergard will take part in a memorial ceremony marking 80 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on the city. In Tokyo, she will meet with representatives of the Japanese Government and with representatives of Nihon Hidankyo, the organisation that won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024. She will also visit the National Defense Academy of Japan.

The aim of the visit is to strengthen and demonstrate Sweden’s bilateral relations with Japan in light of the strategic partnership concluded between the two countries in 2024. This partnership has led to more intensive and broad cooperation in areas such as security and defence, trade and investment, and research and innovation.
