Sub-target 3: Gender-equal education

Published

The third gender equality policy sub-target is ‘Gender-equal education’. Women and men and girls and boys must have the same opportunities and conditions with regard to education and training, study choices and personal development.

The sub-target on gender-equal education includes the entire formal education system, from preschool to higher education institutions, including adult education and vocational higher education. Education and training outside the formal education system is also included, for example folk high schools and study associations' educational activities. Work to counter gender-based study choices includes all parts of education and provides a strategic focus to the work for gender-equal education.

Unhindered by structures and prejudices

Women and men and girls and boys having the same opportunities and conditions with regard to personal development is a matter of having gender-equal conditions to cultivate interests, ambitions, and reaching their full potential without being hindered by structures, prejudices and stereotypical conceptions based on gender. The school system has a particular responsibility to promote personal development.
The objective of gender-equitable personal development also includes other arenas outside the formal and non-formal education sector, for example associations, and has bearing on many of the gender equality policy sub-targets.
