Emergency preparedness objectives
The objectives of Swedish security policy are to safeguard the lives and health of the population, society’s ability to function and its capacity to uphold our fundamental values such as democracy, the rule of law and human rights and freedoms.
Sweden's crisis preparedness and civil defence must be constantly developed to meet a range of difficult challenges, from serious accidents and crises – such as natural disasters, oil spills and disruptions in electricity or water supply – to, in the worst case, war. The Government's national security strategy, presented in January 2017, lays out the framework and focus of the work necessary to safeguard Sweden's security, both within and between different policy areas.
In a constantly changing society, there is a steadfast need to create the conditions that make it possible to prevent and manage events that can have serious consequences. This means that relevant actors at central, regional and local level must continuously develop their activities to enable them to meet the new challenges brought about by a changing world.
