The defence cooperation in practice

Published

At armed forces level, cooperation takes place within all military forces. This includes exercises and training, establishing joint operational capabilities, air and maritime surveillance, securing communications and joint use of military infrastructure, and using each other’s ports and air bases.

Training cooperation between Sweden and Finland is well-established and extensive. The Swedish and Finnish air forces conduct joint exercise activities on a weekly basis within the scope of Cross Border Training.

Naval cooperation between Sweden and Finland takes place primarily within the scope of FISE Naval, which was previously called the Swedish Finnish Naval Task Group (SFNTG). Through the Sea Surveillance Cooperation Finland-Sweden (SUCFIS) naval exercise cooperation, Sweden and Finland collaborate on maritime surveillance.

The focus for army combat forces is on increasing both countries’ ability to operate national units in joint areas of operation, something that has taken place during exercises such as Aurora 23.
