Statement by Minister for International Development Cooperation Johan Forssell

At the initiative of Sweden, in a meeting with foreign ministry representatives in Israel, a large group of EU Member States and other parties today conveyed the urgent need to improve humanitarian access to Gaza.

"I am deeply concerned about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and warnings of impending famine. Urgent improvements in humanitarian access are crucial to facilitate safer, faster and more extensive deliveries of life-saving aid. It was therefore a natural step for Sweden to take the initiative to convey a message together with other EU Member States and international partners: Israel must ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access, which is an obligation under international humanitarian law. Sweden and the EU will continue to push for this", says Minister for International Development Cooperation Johan Forssell.
