North Korea’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Ri Yong-Ho will visit Sweden on 15–16 March
North Korea’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Ri Yong-Ho will visit Sweden on 15–16 March for talks with Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström. The talks will focus on Sweden’s consular responsibilities as a protecting power for the United States, Canada and Australia. They will also address the security situation on the Korean Peninsula, which is high on the Security Council agenda. Sweden is a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2017–2018.
The UN Security Council has unanimously condemned North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programmes and demanded the complete, verifiable and irrevocable elimination of these programmes. The Security Council has also emphasised the need for intensified diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. Sweden fully supports the Security Council resolutions. The aim of the visit is to contribute to the effective implementation of the resolutions.
A press release summarising the talks will be published when the talks are concluded, in the evening of 16 March.
