Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for issues concerning Sweden’s military defence, coordination of civil defence and crisis preparedness, and protection against accidents. Its strategic planning includes international operations and security-building activities, which the agencies are instructed to implement and follow up.

  • DCA bill submitted to Swedish Riksdag

    The Government has decided to submit the Agreement on Defense Cooperation bill between Sweden and the United States to the Swedish Riksdag. The agreement complements Sweden’s NATO accession and strengthens the country’s defence by facilitating US military presence in Sweden.

    The DCA bill will be submitted to Parliament today, Wednesday 8 May 2024.

  • Swedish Armed Forces to contribute forces in Latvia

    The Swedish Government has decided to task the Armed Forces with planning and preparing Swedish participation in NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence, Forward Land Forces (FLF), in Latvia. The contribution will consist of a force equalling the size of a reduced battalion of 600 soldiers. It will be part of a brigade led by Canada beginning in early 2025.

Joint vision to enhance Nordic defence cooperation

In connection with the NORDEFCO ministerial meeting on 29–30 April in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, the Nordic defence ministers signed Vision 2030, a steering document on Nordic defence cooperation going forward.

Swedish Defence Commission submited final report on military defence: Strengthened defence capability, Sweden as an Ally

On Friday, 26 April 2024, the Swedish Defence Commission submitted its final report on the development of the military defence, Strengthened defence capability, Sweden as an Ally, to Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin.

Sweden supports Czech ammunition initiative for artillery shells to Ukraine

Sweden intends to provide EUR 30 million in support for a Czech ammunition initiative for artillery shells to Ukraine. The Government has authorised the Defence Materiel Administration to negotiate and enter into an agreement with the responsible authority in Czechia.

Flag raising ceremonies were held at the Riksdag and Karlberg Palace

On Monday 18 March, Sweden’s membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was celebrated with flag raising ceremonies at the Riksdag and Karlberg Palace. HM The King, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Micael Bydén took part in the ceremonies. At Karlberg Palace, an address was also delivered to the ambassadors of the NATO countries in Sweden.
